Lindelwa Shandu is a hard worker and sets goals to achieve them. Her interest in fashion extends to other industries as she is up-to-date with the music and technological industry too. Lindelwa is inquisitive in her modules as she enjoys gaining different perspectives and isn’t narrow minded. She is innovative as she is creating upcoming business based on creative ideas that can create employment and help society. She also believes in serving others. When she’s not busy being a design student, she acts as a committed entrepreneur as she works as a visual merchandiser at clothing boutiques and sells goods at small markets. Furthermore, she also makes crafty objects. She is capable of working in different environments with all types of people. She enjoys experiencingnew things and experimenting with her style when she’s in the zone.

Lindelwa’s style is predominantly casual chic but when she switches things up, she’s influenced heavily by semi-formal chic. Her style is relevant to mine as she states that Victoria Beckham is her biggest fashion role model and she describes Victoria’s style as “minimalistic”. She also mentioned how she loves being comfortable in her clothing. Similarly, my own style is based on minimalism and I definitely prefer being comfortable in whatever I wear.

During our interview, I was able to gain insight based on her personal style, personality, inspiration and more information on her garments for the upcoming LISOF Fashion Show. Below are the responses to the questions I asked her:

1.Tell my readers about yourself

A: My name is Lindelwa Shandu and I was born in Hilton KZN. Ever since grade five I wanted to be a fashion designer. I used to sit in front of the TV during the holidays and draw the clothes I would see and then I would attempt to make them for my dolls. I have this really big crush on fashion so ever since I started at LISOF I have had this never give up mentality and that is what has brought me this far in my studies.

2. Describe your personal style

A: I think my style could be labelled as casual chic because I love comfortable sporty clothing and accessories, but I also like to spice things up a little sometimes by wearing semi-formal chic clothing.

3. What was the theme for your garments?

A: My theme is Harvest.

4. Where did you get inspiration for the final garments?

A: My garments draw inspiration from harvesters from paintings by artists such as Van Gogh, where the paintings depict women working in a wheat field. These women are dressed in typical 1950’s work wear where they layer their dresses with aprons with big pockets.

5. What was the process that went into constructing these fashion show garments?

A: Well firstly, I had to look for references in pattern books or go through vogue magazines then once I came up with my references, I started my pattern making process. This process consists of taking a basic pattern foundation and re-constructing it to make your design. Then from there I had to come up with an order of construction that I would use to follow to make the garments and then once the pattern pieces and order of construction were corrected and approved, I started constructing my garments.

6. Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to design from the get-go or did you alter your decisions along the way?

A: I had to alter my decisions along the way because sometimes designs look good on paper but once you start constructing them they sometimes don’t work in reality.

7. What are 3 items a designer can’t live without?

A: A pattern book. A spacious hand bag because you are always carrying stationery and fabrics and most importantly pattern scissors. Without pattern scissors you will have a very painful day as normal scissors will leave your hands bruised by the end of the day because they are not as sharp as pattern ones.

8. Who would you say is your number one fashion role model and why?

A: Victoria Beckham. I love her style, it’s minimalistic and timeless.

9. What are your 5 current favourite trends?

A: Luxe lady like

Empower up

Reformation

Deconstruction

Utility street style

10. Where do you want to see yourself as a fashion designer in the future?

A: I see myself working for one of South Africa’s top brands as a head fashion designer or fashion buyer.
