About 2 months ago – on the 6th of May, I attended “We’re Original Kreatif Enlightened” (W.O.K.E) Arts which took place in Pretoria Central which is commonly known as the “012”. The event is about creating a platform which brings together artists and art lovers. It allows publicity for upcoming artists in terms of poetry, music and art. It’s an event with a calm and collected welcoming environment in which people into art are allowed to express themselves through their own pieces of work whether it be songs, spitting poems, playing instruments or show casing their art.
People that were present at this event were mostly people part of the creative space such as photographers, musicians, artists and other creatives. The setting and environment was perfect as it took place on a chilled Sunday. While I was there, I also had the opportunity to interview a few of the attendees to receive more insight about their thoughts about the overall event. Here is what they had to say:
Interview #1 with Silindile Tsotsotso

1. What made you want to come to W.O.K.E. Arts?
My friend actually invited me so I definitely came for the different atmosphere and to see what creative people are busy with out here.
2. Is it your first time at W.O.K.E. Arts?
Yes, this is my first time at W.O.K.E. Arts and I am already having a good time so I believe by the end of the day I'll be filled with so much inspiration.
3. Did you come for the art, fashion or the music?
I came here for the art but because I am a fashion student I cannot help but also notice the fashion around me.
4. Do you believe there is a relation between art and fashion?
Yes, I believe there is a relation between the two because they both tell a story or evoke emotion. After all fashion is art that is worn.
5. Do you feel as if an event like this allows one to build connections and become more knowledgeable of the creative space?
Definitely because art communicates with us in a different way than usual and it also brings forth things that are happening among us that we might not have known about. It is so interesting to see the various beautiful art pieces and connect with them in some way.
6.What inspired your outfit choice and how did you put it together?
I wanted to feel comfortable but still look fashionable. The flared pants are not only in fashion at the moment but they are also comfortable. I didn't want to carry a handbag the whole time so that's why I opted for a fanny pack.
Interview #2 with Dithekgo Mogadime

1.What made you want to come to W.O.K.E. Arts?
I attended W.O.K.E. because I was invited by an artist performing there. Moreover, I have had other family members and friends involved in the event in other capacities. Everybody seemed to have praise for the event and its musicians, artists and fashion. I had to attend recently to see if it lived up to expectations and past experiences.
2. Is it your first time at W.O.K.E. Arts?
No, I’ve been to W.O.K.E twice, however, I attended between different timeframes of each event. The first time I attended, I was supporting my cousin’s art and paintings as her work was on show. This was in 2015 - when it was hosted in a truly small and intimate setting. It’s great to see their growth and success.
3. Did you come for the art, fashion or the music?
I came for fashion, art and music. All three. W.O.K.E. outfits tend to be expressive and often act as statements. Most attendees are creatives within the industry and they always attempt to distinguish and differentiate themselves. I find the idea of standing out intriguing. Furthermore, there are some incredibly talented musicians and artists who constantly put their work on display. All 3 free fronts work cohesively to create an entirely different event.
4. Do you believe there is a relation between art and fashion?
Yes. Fashion and art are both platforms in which individuals can express themselves. It allows them to display their differences, moods and depict their experiences. They’re are somewhat linked too as fashion and art have always worked hand-in-hand over time.
5. Do you feel as if an event like this allows one to build connections and become more knowledgeable of the creative space?
Yes, this is the perfect event for a creative to network. It allows artists, musicians and fashion creatives the opportunity to expand on greater experiences, display and express their thoughts within their art from while allowing people to collaborate. Furthermore, the event spreads positive messages about creating a unified and growing culture between Pretoria’s creatives.
6. What inspired your outfit choice and how did you put it together?
My outfit was inspired by my love for Champion as a brand alongside the idea of not being over-dressed but rather favouring a cool and simplistic dress style capable of setting me apart among creatives.
In totality, I enjoyed the event as it had a great and social atmosphere surrounded by talented musicians, artists and fashion (my favourite part). I became exposed to a lot of new people who are part of the creative industry and those interactions could possibly lead to collaboration or opportunities.
Here are a few pictures from the event:
